It works, but the files take up a lot of room. So you'd need a massive HD, and a method to route iTunes to it.
I did that too, but you are right it takes too long.

I can control my entire iTunes library through my iPhone using Remote. It's all hooked up to my Stereo/TV via the AppleTV, which is a tiny box a little bit bigger than a hockey puck that sits behind my TV. I've been doing it for a couple years now. I love it.

Seems like a huge waste of time.

I can do that too, but I want my movies on a separate drive.

    Dave on point as usual.

you need to use a free program called handbrake that will convert your DVDs to allow them to be in the iTunes library.

Takes about 15-30 min per disc.

Keep me posted. I'd like to do the same thing you're looking to do, but I'd rather be able to control it through iTunes. I have a lot of TV shows on there too.

I have a 500gig computer, and nearly 200 of it is iTunes. I'd really like to move my library to an external HD, and to convert the rest of my DVD's (over 100), to the library. I'm think that a 3TB HD wouldn't be able to handle it all.

    What do you do?

You're welcome. I have one of these (an older model) and it plays everything. It doesn't matter what I throw at it. MKV, AVI, MPEG, DVD & Blu-ray ISO's... it eats it all. Put a big HDD in there and you're good to go.

Or if you really wanna go hard-core, get one of these:

and put 4 big HDD's in there. You can have over 10TB of storage that way. Hook both machines up to your home network and you're good to go.
My name was supposed to be French fries with mayo but I was drunk when I signed up.

You can also just call me "Dick".

I think that most of these devices would have some sort of app that allows you to control your media, but unlike iTunes (i think) that you would only be able to watch where the device is hooked up.

Exactly that. I wish the Apple TV could deal with a NAS drive. And didn't require a computer.

Roku or Xbox might do that. Buying a huge USB 3.0 drive and putting all your media on it will work and you can enjoy apple tvs easy menu.

That looks great, but I imagine that it costs a small fortune, and probably a bit more than I need at the moment. I will still read up on it though. Thanks.
