There's a million books out there for that. At my previous job anybody dealing with customers were required to read a "making small talk" book. The most timid people I've met turned into chatterboxes so it's worth a try.

i just ask people inane questions about shit i couldn't care less about and pretend to listen. like "oh, what's that you're having for lunch, that smells good. what's that spice i smell? is that cumin?" and i have everyone's CV in my office so i can bring up crap like "so, you went to UC Berkeley right?"
