I think the reason they are deflecting is purely business, and is the reason Howard didn't want Robin to make any announcements. Let's say Robin announced that she had terminal cancer. Cancer would then completely hijack the show going forward. It would be The Cancer Show, the elephant in the room, and the show would cease to be a comedy show (too easy to make a joke here). How could it not? Of course it's still the elephant in the room, but it's a baby elephant. They will make an announcement of some sort when they are forced to make an announcement.

Having a narcissistic nature when bringing up mundane health issues is probably in Robin's wheelhouse...But when someone is staring death in the face, all bets are off...
Robin clearly has some type of life threatening illness and wants to keep it private. I can't believe even someone like Robin would keep quiet in an attempt to sell more books...
