If anyone here has any medical knowledge, is there any medication a person takes that would require limited/minimal alcohol use?

Anti-anxiety meds , anti-depressants, some allergy meds, and AMBIEN. Plus various others with less serious interactions.

In a physical a couple of years ago the doctor came back with some blood work showing some elevated Liver functions.

That's what I can remember for his reduced drinking.

Hepatitis is defined as the inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by a virus; be drug or alcohol induced; be auto-immune; be hereditary or be of uncertain cause. Any evidence of hepatitis (laboratory results such as the AST, ALT, GGT go up) would result in investigation by the treating doc and the recommendation that one curtail drinking.

This same thing happened a while back, and someone on this board or maybe SFN suggested it was because Beth was pregnant so they had to be sober together. Apparently that wasn't the case, but it was a funny thought.

As far as what medications might explain it, the most likely answer is antibiotics. You aren't supposed to drink on them, but it's not entirely verboten, which fits with the one drink a week notion. If it were a real alcoholism or liver problem, or medication that interacted adversely with alcohol, not even one a week would be allowed. Why he might be taking antibiotics could be anything from (plastic?) surgery to old-fashioned hypochondria.

My guess though is that he has been led to believe that whatever is ailing Robin was exacerbated or even caused directly by her alcohol abuse. Of all her self-destructive hobbies designed to end her pain, her pretentious wine gluttony was probably the most damaging. Howard in his neurosis possibly saw what she did to herself, asked his psychiatrist how much is safe to drink, and once a week was what the hack answered with.
