The Sea Shepard crew relies on electronics made by near-slave labor. Fight the good fight, you socially awkward fucks!

I'm asking about the dish itself (Shark Fin Soup) and how it tastes. Does the taste alone warrant it's popularity in the Asian community? Or is it merely a sign of prestige as they say it is?

If the sharks were caught, killed quickly and humanely and then the majority of the meat used, its one thing. Also if the shark population was controlled and proven to be in no danger is another. To throw the body away when the meat is perfectly good seems like such a waste. The thing about these videos is, a lot of the times they show he absolute worst case scenario that is happening out there and this in no way reflects on the majority of the fishermen catching sharks. I don't know much about the numbers involved with this fishery but it does seem pretty shady.
I agree that it's awful to waste any animal and the population issue is something that deserves attention, but how do you think nearly ALL fish are harvested? Not by a guy hitting them with a club. They're either yanked out of the water via a big hook through their face and then left to drown...or they are dragged in nets where they drown.
If there was a market for the shark meaet, it wouldn't be discarded. Essentially, sharks are singled out over tuna because their non-fin meat is shitty and their individual deaths look dramatic. I've never ever seen somebody shouting about the awful "tuna genocide." The numbers of tuna is dwindling as well and the way they are caught and harvested is fucking brutal.
And, for the record, I don't hunt and I don't fish. Other than turkey and chicken, I haven't eaten any meat in well over a decade. I don't dismiss the suffering of animals, but singling out the cute ones or cool ones seems insincere to me. I get why these videos bother people, but I don't get why some people can't put it into context. Not you, I mean people in general.

You're preaching to the choir here my friend. I have been saying the same things for years. Don't get me wrong, I am all for the utilizing of natural resources including animals. Its just good to see it done properly and with safeguards in place to protect populations.
We have an annual seal hunt up here where seals are killed for the pelts. The attention this garners because of the optics is crazy. The hunt is so demonized that now there are bans in many countries against the import of fur. So now the seal numbers are growing out of control and they are talking about a cull. So no part of the animal will be used. This is where Sea Shepherd were protesting for awhile untill they got arrested and their boat confiscated. They haven't been back since.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to argue at all...I just wanted to make clear the thought process behind my original comment...which was a bit smug.
I didn't know about the seal problem, but I know folks who are dealing with similar problems involving wolves and their livestock. The idea of killing wolves seems absolutely evil...they're beautiful and majestic and they're genetically dogs...and they're wreaking havoc on farmers. Coyotes, who are nearly identical genetically, but not as cute, are A-OK to blast away. I have a good friend who has to "manage" them nearly daily down in Texas. Nobody has ever condemned him for it.
Feral hogs are proven to be among the more intelligent mammals and they, too, wreak havoc on the land. I don't see Hayden Panatierre calling for a cease of their slaughter. After all, they're ugly and gross....unlike dolphins which are cute and magical (and indulge in infanticide and genocide.)

I only like to eat dolphins that were killed by someone fucking them in the blowhole.
The above is strictly my humble opinion.
