All I saw was "I love you, you're a good kid" and the tears started flowing.

The weather was rainy outside and I went out to look at the fireworks in the street while the rest stayed inside.

After a while my dad joined me and we reflected on the last year for a little bit. At one point toward the end of the conversation my dad said: "I love you, you're a good kid." and it made me tear up and sob uncontrollably like a little bitch. I couldn't believe such simple words could mean so much. They were big, heavy tears of joy, man. I take so much appreciation in this kind of stuff, and I think all of us should, or at least try to. I'm still a young guy at 26 and my parents will probably be around for a while, but it made me realize again how important family really is. Spend time with them, or you'll regret it. I'm sure of it.

Perhaps your family is important, but you really don't have any right to tell the rest of us how 'important' our family is or that we'll regret not spending time with them. Methinks you need to get over yourself .... Sheesh.

My dad is great but not into emotional stuff. I think he's pretty ok with me though. My mom takes every shot she can to belittle me or my wife......she has always liked my brother more and doesn't hide that fact. Also to say that she was physically abusive to me when I was a child is an understatement. Unfortunately if I spend time with pops I have to endure dear old moms and I just can't voluntarily put myself through that anymore. I've thought about being the bigger person and letting things go but then realize "fuck that"......it's a miracle I'm not a serial killer.

My wife is the greatest and I let her know it often. Regretting not spending time with my parents? Not likely. It is what it is.

.....and OP.....good for you, that must be great!

Happy new years everyone. Make this year count.
Relish every moment you can have with them, because there's no lonelier feeling in the world than when Mom and Dad are gone. Consider yourself very lucky!

I didn't take it that he was being that way- lecturing us- about it. All of us have different relationships with our families and there are certainly some who don't want to be with their familes for whatever reason. Happy New Year and I hope your 2013 is the best year of your life, except for 2014, 2015....

    Exactly.
My name was supposed to be French fries with mayo but I was drunk when I signed up.

You can also just call me "Dick".
