To those who hate Cabbie

First, everyone is entitled to their opinion but from some of the user comments in Cabbie's thread it is apparent that a number of folks here loathe him. I am a bit sympathetic to him and would like to make an argument in his favor for you guys to tear apart.

The way I see it is like this--Cabbie was more than just a wack-packer on the Stern show. He was a broadcast professional who had a successful career and was savvy enough to become a regular on THSS. I agree that both he and Stern used each other--Cabbie to further his notoriety and promote himself as a DJ, and Howard to leverage the "Crazy" part of Cabbie's persona. Lee gave Howard a shit-ton of ratings; from the boxing match, to the search for his mother, to his imprisonment--Cabbie delivered both radio and TV ratings like few others in the history of THSS.

I've never heard Lee ever claim that Howard was to blame for him going to prison. I do think that after he was released he really wanted to come work at Sirius, and Howard surely could have made that happen in some capacity during his first contract--either on H101 or elsewhere on Sirius. He's not just some joe-blow off the street--he was a top-name jock in NYC and had a proven track record in radio. A Cabbie show on Sirius would be 100X fucking better than Jason Ellis. And it would have been better than anything that has ever been on H101. But obviously Howard didn't want to part with any marbles and it is doubtful that he went to bat for Cabbie with Sirius. This is where I cut Lee some slack--he really put himself out for Stern back in the day--and as a broadcasting PEER of Stern's (who introduced him to his fucking wife!) I think he's right for feeling like he was shit on. I think the final straw was when Howard had Ralph shit all over Cabbie during his final appearance--probably breaking some verbal agreements about the stuff Lee was trying to promote.

All that said, filming a porn in Howard's studio is inexcusable unless (as Lee has claimed) he received explicit permission to do so. But even having done that, I still think Howard should have helped him out. It's not like Stern didn't have porn whores in the studio all the time or was somehow morally chaste himself. Remember that Howard paid to have a stripper shit in a cup for a room full of guys at a party--I can see where Lee (who partied with Howard) might not think Howard would really be all that concerned about some fucking in the studio.

Cabbie was and is and always will be a piece of shit. He was a loser who Howard gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to for boxing matches, Trim Spa, and so on. But Howard owes him more? Get real. That's what Cabbie went to jail for---not claiming or filing taxes on the $100,000 he won for boxing Stuttering John. I think John actually won the match but part of the deal was Cabbie would get $100,000 regardless. Later Cabbie said on the Stern show he hadn't claimed that money to the IRS or even filed any taxes for the past several years. The IRS was listening and next thing you know he's doing time. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me; that's how I remember it.
