I reached where you are back in 2010 waiting for Howard to fill the Artie seat. A lot of things started becoming clear then.

But you lost me when you said:

And yeah, radio over here is pretty much the same as it was in the 50's, only with much shittier music and more over-modulated voices.

renchfrieswith, let me say first that as an American who has traveled in Europe, you have my sympathies. My two cents on European radio, and really television and film as well, is that Europe has really stagnated with political correctness after WWII. My point being that unless you're a German who supports the neo-nazi movement or its ideals, or at the worst had an ancestor who was a Nazi and profited from it, you shouldn't have to be ashamed of your culture. It's as if you have to constantly downplay the glories of western civilization (and sometimes out and out ignore history, especially of the Roman empire and what territories were conquered and forcibly converted to Islam by Muslims). It's easy to buy into the hype that the West has been the bully of history, but the truth is that were it not for the Crusades, Spain, Portugal, southern France, Sicily, and most of the Italian islands would still be ruled by conquering Arab armies. And even with the Crusades, the eastern Roman empire fell.

This is so true. A kid got expelled from high-school a year ago because he had a Dutch flag on his backpack. Can you imagine that? They thought it was too nationalistic and that's a bad thing. It made the news and there was an outrage, but most people were against it. Saying anything negative about Islam is also a big no-no. I can't even watch the news anymore. It's so incredibly PC that it's unwatchable.

As someone who is half Armenian I can tell you that the Turks are not even 1 tenth of one millionth of a percent willing to admit that they committed the Armenian genocide and took most of our homeland and have no problem airing outright racist and jingoistic programming on their radio and tv. Go ask the Turks if they plan to build an Armenian genocide memorial, and see how fast they arrest you for insulting Turkishness. I spent a lot of time in France, and whenever I asked anyone about their cultural malaise they were just puzzled and basically said "Oh no, it was all just evil Christians conquering Muslims and we have to be ashamed of that and WWII forever while embracing total political correctness and secularization." The Scandinavians are far worse than your people, though, when it comes to that. I wouldn't go back to Scandinavia at gunpoint.

I hear ya. Never been to Scandinavia but I hung out with some Swedish exchange students when I studied in the US. I noticed they were very judgmental about the whole patriotic thing that's going on in the US with all the flags and shit. We really don't have that on that level here in Europe. Maybe the Russians, but most people seem almost ashamed of being proud of their country.

Anyway, as to Howard, the show still isn't necessarily horrible, it's just a shell of what it was. That, and a lot of us longtime fans feel betrayed because of the way that he has treated his staff, particularly Jackie and Billy West, though maybe we should have seen it coming all along? If you have listened to the end of the Artie Addiction Saga, and heard the now classic "Not My Bro" fight, you should have an idea. I don't feel as bad for Jackie because he still makes money as a stand up and seems to have a good life, but I don't think I can ever forgive Howard for how he treated Artie.

I can see that.

I envy you. There are countless hours of HILARIOUS old shows that, to me, are still funny on their third or forth listen. THAT's why we hate Howard. It'd be like if your heroine dealer started bringing you iced tea instead.

I'm glad I could find some good old stuff on the internet. I have the first two months of 1995 and I got a full year of 1996. I just wish I could find full years of 2005-2008. I'd like to listen to the Sirius shows from the beginning, too.

Its was a major turning point for me. I only really started with THSS when he moved to Sirius, and it made me realize i never liked Howard (or Robin), i really only liked Artie, Richard & Sal, and the wackpack.

Yeah I listened to that. Howard and Robin came off really poorly in that segment. Howard should have dropped it after the first ten minutes but he kept on pushing Artie until he reacted in a way that was hurtful to Howard. After that the gloves were off and nasty things were said to one another.

You are correct. When I listen back to the old tapes ( have only listened since Sirius) I hear Howie saying exactly who he is and what he is going to do when he "makes it".
It's all done as self deprecating humor but it's all there. He says he doesn't care about people, he is better than everyone else, nobody should be popular but him, he only cares about how women look, you are dirt and beneath him. He says it all over and over again and again. People think it's shtick but it really is how he sees himself in the world.I think people expect him to be deep and still be the same old guy for the sake of his "art". But that is not him.
He is an opportunist shallow neurotic pathetic excuse for a man, always has been and always will be regardless of the fame or fortune. For him he will never have enough love. His wretch evil mother took care of that.
These Hampton people all go around saying they love people all the time but it is the vapid socialite vocabulary they use it's not real love for another human being. Howchie is so fucking needy that he doesn't care that it's phony. It's enough to satiate him for now. He will grow very bitter once he retires.

Yeah, and I kinda feel bad for the guy. Despite all his incredible successes he still seems miserable deep down inside.

In later years they drew names, and some staffer or intern (I forget which) gave Howard that headstone for Christmas. Needless to say, it really creeped him out. Howard was legendary in the old days for having a wood chipper in studio and throwing gifts into it that displeased him.
