I worked with Jonathon Winters, and he did a whole routine of improv on the spot for a bunch of us, probably 30 people. It was HILARIOUS and we were all LOL......THEN...

....he segued into a story about creeping up on "Jap" soldiers and cutting their heads off, and having nightmares about it for years. He kinda stopped and looked at our faces, which had gone from LOL to WTF....

....and he tried to laugh it off, saying, "But you don't want to hear about that," really embarrassed he'd gone there. Then he went on and told some other funny stories, but it was a look into the psyche of a man tortured by war

I believe it....no quarter was given in the Pacific....There's a crazy story on Ken Burn's The War...this guy tells about a bunch of dudes sitting around resting while one of their guys is prying the gold teeth out of a live Jap with a bayonete, while the Jap struggles, flopping around and shit....crazy stuff...pure hatred
