Reggae Mistress basically said it already, but I remember Tim Gunn having a "shopping list" for women so that they can have a professional wardrobe full of classic pieces that they can accessorize. His list is a great guideline.

I'm offbeat and I wear a uniform for my job, so I don't need a professional wardrobe. Also, that means I could give a flying eff about what's trendy.

My only guideline to the clothes I wear that are "dressy", my basic pieces (like coats and shoes), and my lingerie is that I try to pick out things that look expensive.

That doesn't mean you have to necessarily shop at Saks, Barney's, or Bergdorf. I've seen plenty of clothes from all three places that look very cheap but carry a huge price tag. You just have to have good taste or know someone who has it. Trends are disposable.

My wardrobe is quite large, but I've been the same size as high school, have wardrobe items dating back to that time too because I take very good care of the prettier things in my closet. As it goes right now, I'm spending about $1000 to $1500 a year on clothing because up until about half a year ago, I was only spending maybe $100-$200 a year on my entire wardrobe...a lot of stuff was falling apart.

The point is that you can get some really nice stuff at Target or even Goodwill if you have a good eye.
