As to your point about militias and the national guard as it relates to the 2nd ammendment, I believe the supreme court ruled that the right to bear arms was an individual right, not a collective right. The national guard was founded in 1913 about 130 years after the constitution was written. I don't think the framers had the national guard in mind when they wrote second ammendment.

I disagree with a ban on firearm ownership, for many reasons. But even if I didn't, there is a shitload of illegal guns and ammo just floating around, you are looking at 50 years minimum before that is exhausted, and then only criminals will be using it.

I believe the federalist papers made reference to any able bodied male in the community between 16 and 45(?) to be included in the militia. The real intent of the 2nd ammendment was for people to be armed primarily to protect against a foreign invader (aka the british). It was also meant to protect family and property. Some take one paragraph out of Thomas Jefferson's writings to say the 2nd ammendment is there to help people overthrow the govt.--in my opinion that was not the primary intent, and a tyranical govt today would likely have enough tools to forcibly disarm the population if they wanted to.

The other thing to remember is that the founding fathers didn't really believe in having a standing army in a time of peace, the able bodied men would join the war effort if necessary and would have their own weapons to use at a moment's notice(minute men). A ton of the weapons in the revolutionary, 1812, and civil wars were privately owned including very devastating weapons like gattling guns and cannons.
