The reason why it bothers me is that he always holds JD up as a model employee. Constantly, when he's putting down others, he talks about how JD's work ethic is amazing, and he's often times there at 3 in the morning, when he doesn't have to be. Howard talks about how loyal and solid he is. Really glowing talk all of the time, in fact.

All of that goes out of the window, though, as soon as he sees any glimpse of him potentially having an issue. Really condescending tone, talking about how he's afraid he'll be sued for getting rid of someone with a mental illness (so you guys are totally right that Howard lawyered up, and all of the Artie bs is 100% about that). Stern has no problem with using people, just so long as it doesn't require an ounce of care or "bother" from him. Then you see his true colors.

If the guy, JD, has always been a model employee, why not an ounce of compassion? Most telling is that it seems like his anxiety comes from being on the subway. It was after he got robbed and punched in the face there. It's perfectly understandable why something like that would ramp up a person's anxiety, if they were prone to that type of thing to begin with. On top of that, as Howard noted when he used to praise JD, JD clearly gets there at the butt crack of the morning. So taking the subway at times like that, when bad things are prime to happen, has to be even more nerve-wracking for a person with anxiety.

If JD was such a good employee, why not dip into some of that money for the production money (not used enough, clearly, since he wanted Carolla to work for free), and get JD a taxi or something, since he comes in that early? That can't be anything more than $10k a year. I know it's not required, but some bosses are willing to do something nice for an employee whom they really like, especially if they know they're going through something.

I don't know, it just seems so cruel to me that you could build someone up so much, and the moment that they become any sort of "problem" to you, you cruelly and callously make it clear that they truly mean nothing to you. Believe it or not, not every boss operates that way. I've seen some real acts of kindness from bosses, especially when it's in a smaller, familial, type setting.

It's a Howard thing. I don't think he has any sense of loyalty to anyone in his life, except for Beth and his shrink. Not even to his kids. How long had his daughter been living in California, before he bothered to go see her? And that wasn't until Beth dragged him to a starfucker wedding out there. So "hey, why not stop by, since I'm there to see celebrities anyway."

Meanwhile, when Beth flew off to do that show in Vegas for a few weeks, Howard immediately got on a flight to go see her within, what, two weeks?

It's all just really repulsive. And especially so, considering you'd think that therapy would have made him far more compassionate. He feigns it, but he doesn't really feel it, or understand it.

    Thanks @ rep, once again!

Howard's not just cruel......................he's bitch-faggot cruel. He won't mix it up with anybody on a level playing field; he's got to feast on people who are under his thumb and aren't able to fight back.

The only explanation I can think of is that he's obviously still harboring deep wounds and resentments from childhood/adolescence, and the Arties and JDs of this world must "pay" for them.

But when does the shrink arrive at this obvious conclusion?!? When does Howard begin to show a glimmer of improvement in this area?!?

    WTF are they talking about?!?

The only way someone gets to be such a bitchy, greedy, creepy faggot is if they enjoy being a bitchy, greedy, creepy faggot. And tragically, I don't think that's going to change in his lifetime. I actually think being this way is his one true joy in life.

You know who Howard is? Percy from "The Green Mile". The geriatric Jew-pelican version, anyway.

He's gotta prove to that ever present and ever scolding father of his that he's worth a damn... He validates himself by pointing out other people's shortcomings and putting them in their place.

Howard said repeatedly before Artie tried to kill himself that he didn't care if Artie was doing smack as long as he was funny on the air. Once it got real, he changed his tune after the suicide attempt pretending he didn't know anything about his problem and that he believed Artie that he wasn't on herion.

All you have to do is look how he fed the habits of Hank, Sam Kinison, and others to show that he had no problem helping people piss their lives down the drain as long as they made good radio.

I mentioned this in another thread, I am glad I am not the only one who use to like THIS Robin. I have a strong feeling that Don Buchwald did Howard's dirty work by telling her to back the fuck off.

Howard's persona on the on demand TV shows is that of a ringmaster. He likes bringing the freak show on. He doesn't participate in it, just watches it and puts it out there as a show for all to see. The freakier the better. The problem is that people like Artie and Dana Plato and Bigfoot and Elegant Elliot are not acting. They are real deal. People who have serious mental health issues. He was unable to to see the difference. At least until Artie tried to kill himself. The show then became safe, insulated, controlled and contrived. In other words not fun or funny. I think the show sucking now is directly related to his reaction Artie's suicide attempt.

There was a time when Robin's role was more spontaneous and off the cuff (honest?) in any case, this goes back to what I said earlier about the controlled, contrived nature of the show. She's just to ask a question like she never heard about what soda stream?? so Howard could plug it and then cackle away. I wonder if SHE's at all bothered by the show sucking now. Maybe she misses the way it used to be?

As horrible a human being as this summation makes Howard, I think you're giving him far too much credit.

Please don't mistake common greed for finally seeing the light regarding exploitation.

Howard wanted to hurt Artie......................probably more than he wanted to put on a good show.

Ever notice how flippin' easy it is for people to self-destruct in the Stern universe?!? You think that's an accident, a by-product of the environment, or Howard only being about "for the good of the show"?!?

    I don't.

I think Howard wants it easy for people to self-destruct because he gets off on the misery of others..........................especially those that had the nerve to help him build his empire.

He resents needing others...................and even more, resents the credit others get "off his back", when the truth is actually the reverse of that........................so much that he actively, if passive-aggressively, facilitates and encourages their destruction.

I think he's at the point in his life where he gets off more on preventing someone getting paid than getting paid himself. I think he'd rather make somebody else miserable than try to make himself happy.
