it feels rough, similar in appearance to a dog's paw pad but smaller and it's not flush with his lip. It's raised about an 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch.

I'm pretty sure it's localized demodectic mange.

I asked her about it possibly being what you thought it was Mack and she said that Mange is a burrowing mite so it would be under the skin and you can only see the mite Microscopically .If it was Mange it wold be a scab or pustule not a bump.

I had a Bull dog with skin allergies. She would cost me a couple hundred bucks a month in vet bills, but then I found a vet that worked for a nonprofit no kill shelter and he told me this.

The $30 shampoo is nothing more then Selsun Blue you can buy in any grocery store.

Change his diet stay away from commercial dog food too many preservatives. I found the Solid Gold products work well.

Flack seed oil two teaspoons mixed with cottage cheese every morning is great for the skin.

FWIW, the spot is almost grey when not lit up by a flash. Crazy how the flash brings out the brindle. Look at his leg and muzzle... that's his "normal" color.

Elvis just had a few removed before this last surgery.
