Let me see if I get this right (and please step in if I'm missing something) the NRA wants to keep the freedom offered by the second amendment (the right to bear arms) but is willing to have police at every school.....and mall.....and church.....effectively making the US a police state (like a communist country or dictatorship). this was a stupid statement. how does armed guards in schools prevent kids from being attacked in other places? what about in churches, or the mall, etc. the issue is clearly not the presence of guns on the street but nobody seems to want to address this because they know we do not know how to address mental health effectively..

They need a better representative. That press conference was a train wreck. I thought he had some valid points but a lot of insane points as well. He appeared wacky and not particularly bright. His idea about having a data base listing all mentally ill people was especially brilliant. That wouldn't further stigmatize mental health issues and prevent people from seeking help...not at all.

Cut a few paper pushers in the office and the money is there. Shit, growing up they had a DARE officer in our schools here 3 days a week and he came armed. Also with psych evals we have many military men and women coming off duty who are perfectly trained to do these tasks since they are the tasks they performed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

actually i kinda think we should have a cop in every school because kids need protecting from lots of things, not just from nuts with an assault rifle. we lock up our more valuable and precious things now? well our kids are the most precious things we have so we should do what we can to protect them but not just from guns. eliminating guns and/or putting armed guards in schools does nothing to stop the next tim mcvey from targeting a school or a college (and if we remove guns there will be more McVeys). any solution has to be more generalized than gun control and armed guards.

The killer didn't blow his brains out until cops WITH GUNS arrived. Maybe if confronted sooner he would have blew his brains out then and saved 1-2-5-10-15 how many ever victims it could have. You'd rather some nut with a gun operate with impunity for 5-10 minutes until the cops arrive than even in the worst case just having someone else with a gun drawing the killers fire? Yes the next response is "Well what happens if the armed guard killers a kid or several with stray fire" and the answer to that is the other guy with a gun is intentionally shooting kids!
