this one should be fun though: the rock is going to come so close to the planet that it will be closer than our communications satellites. if it just glances the outer atmosphere it will scare the shit out of people, of course if it comes in a bit lower it will kill everyone so it will be like a Disney E ticket ride

Anything that large even interacting with our atmosphere would have some ill effects for anyone in the direct path even if its a glancing blow wouldn't it?

i think the plan is to put up a mass driver assembly within the next 5 years which should give us enough time to nudge it off.

Oh sorry. We can't just blow it up because it would become shrapnel. We have to move it, but we can't just push it because it might shatter into shrapnel again. If we make a series of small explosions near it, it's mass will move a little bit from the exploding gas without breaking up, or at least that's the theory. In 5 years we might be able to attach some sort of engine to it and drive it away. If we push continuously for 10 years we wouldn't have to use an especially powerful engine.
