The weird puritan attitude in the US that you have to abstain from everything for the rest of your life if you have a problem probably does a lot more harm to people like Artie than good.
Let me say first, as a fellow TP fan, I'm pretty sure that the real Howard is in the Black Lodge with Dale Cooper (so if he went there around 2007, we may see the real Howard in 2032).

Anyway, the problem with true with addiction is that there is a biological component. Artie is an addict of the highest order, and his brain is just wired in such a way that it's nearly impossible for him to quit. I don't think it would matter as to what country he's in; I have a cousin who is a really bad alcoholic, and I fight with my family who want to drink around him about this all the time. Some people can't just have a drink, they have to have ten, then twenty, then drink every day so you don't get hung over....It all ends up crashing down of course, but the science of addiction has changed a lot. Artie really needs to quit cold turkey and never touch the stuff again, but it's way easier said than done.

I can't believe people on this site blamed Howard for Artie's (second) suicide. The guy is a mess. Destroyed himself on Mad TV. Was on heroin throughout Beer League. Missed the Bob Saget roast, missed Will's wedding, was missing lots of gigs. Got some DWIs. And tried to kill himself. Now he's missing work again and missing gigs. Artie does this no matter who his employer is. Arrested in Paris? He should have been in rehab immediately after that.

I drink every day. Maybe 4-5 beers after a hard day's work. Sometimes less. On the weekends, I'm good for a bunch of beers. I used to drink a lot of rum, but cut it out about 7 years ago, just because my body wasn't handling it as well and frankly I drink beer because I like it and not to get drunk. Rum and other liquors just don't do it for me anymore. Kicks the shit outta me and really, not very refreshing. I never miss it. Every January I cut out beer as well, just to let my body have a break and it's really no problem. I never miss a day because I'm hung over.

The point being that you are right...addiction is in part genetic/biological. Some people can't drink for shit. It just hits them differently. They can't stop. Others, like I, can drink regularly and really not become a slave to it.

Interesting read (also a movie) about a LA writer (ALF, Moonlighting, etc..) who was addicted to heroin.

This guy's addiction seems very Artie-Langesque.

i don't blame howard. but he's so full of shit (shocker). his whole "i believed artie" was his way of letting artie's addiction and downward spiral continue to carry the show. howard rode artie into the ground and threw him away when artie crashed. howard's a real bro. the minute artie no longer could do anything for him, it was cut from existence. artie is a fuck up and seems like he's destine to always be one, not anyone's fault but his. it's the way howard handled the whole thing that gets to me. just another example to throw on the pile of why howard is a piece of shit.

no need to panic. he probably woke up, was a bit tired, and fell face first into the wall. happens all the time to non-junkies.

Exactly, I couldn't have put it better. It pissed me off so much that I quit listening for about 4 months, and looking back now I shouldn't have bothered starting back up. In the end, Howard was no one's bro, be it Billy, Artie, or Jacky.

Agreed. Artie was (and probably always will be) unstable, stubborn, and self-destructive and the suicide attempt probably would have happened regardless of what Howard did. The thing that bugs me is Howard's ridiculous claim (that he still repeats to this day) that he didn't know Artie was on drugs. If he would just admit that he knew but didn't feel it was his responsibility to take action, didn't know what to do, or even that he didn't care - whatever the truth really is - I'd have at least some respect for him instead of the disgust I have now.

Just saying...I'm hoping that Artie actually does have that nasty stomach virus that has been going around NYC, the same one that caused Hillary Clinton to pass out and crack her head.

    but it's probably heroin related.

I've always gotten the gay vibe from Artie. I think that's what led to his addiction. He just can't face and accept it.
