I really do think the Catholic Church needs to let priests get married. The policy outlived its usefulness, for the first 1000 years of the Catholic Church priests could get married, monks couldn't. That was the whole point of being a monk or a friar. Also, if you are an Eastern Rite Christian, you can still be a priest and get married (for Catholics, there are different rites with their own rules, the Latin, Byzantine and Syriac/Assyrian). I am half Armenian, and my family was Catholic Armenian, not Orthodox, and my grandfather was a Catholic priest.

I REALLY don't want to start an argument in this thread about this, but the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Eastern Rite are basically the same religion, they forked from each other after the Great Schism, with Rome and the Latins running the Catholic church (which the Byzantine rite is in communion with) and the bishop of Constantinople running the Eastern Orthodox one. So I don't think it's fair to say one is older, they just split from each other over some really stupid issues. My ancestors fled to Italy before coming to America because they were part of the Latin rite, while the Armenian Orthodox mainly fled to Greece (before the Turks wiped almost all of us out, that is). I just get worked up about it because the majority of Armenians are Orthodox and I get into arguments about this all the time.

i've visited the palace of the popes in avignon, france which split from the church in rome in the 14th century. i'm fascinated with that period of history (knights templars and cathars). i must have been catholic in another life because i love being in churches.

The sad thing is that the vow of celibacy has nothing to do with the actual religion. The reason that clergy can't marry is because; if they can't marry, they can't have children who are recognized as true heirs. It was the early established church's way of retaining all property.

In all fairness, there's no "Head Jew" who's been implicated in covering up huge molestation networks. There's no orphanages and schools for they wayward in Ireland where thousands of children were raped and molested by rabbis over a several decades and there was no giant organization that knew about it and covered it up. Synagogues and temples aren't shutting down because of lawsuits due to years of systemic diddling.

I'm sure that most priests and clergy have never done anything sick towards children, but there's still a significant minority who has and an entire global institution did everything they could to ignore it or sweep it under the rug.
