they can always grab info off it
Exactly. The first thing you do in forensic training is recover data from broken cd's

i couldn't believe how fast it took to take info off. I broke a hd once and figured everything was pretty much gone.

she took it, i thought it would take a few days. she had it back to me in like 20 minutes.

Doesn't surprise me former fbi on the clip showing 2 broken drives. Saying you can't do anything with these. Of course they want you to think that.

Just overwrite the whole drive to DOD standard even though most experts agree that one pass of "0's" is sufficient.

People sell their old hard drives on eBay all the time. A lot of them think a format will clean it then they wonder why they get their identity stolen when the hard drive is recovered by the buyer Not only that but if you have some embarrassing pics they will be posted all over the net

So, if anyone can explain in plain language, what is the extra crap on a hard drive? Like, if I buy a 240G harddrive, it says I really have 225G or something.....and I can't erase the other stuff.

    Thermite hard drive destruction?

With a magnetic hard drive Im pretty sure that if you encrypt the hard drive you can just use any standard wipe and they will not be able to recover it. I dont think wiping works on SSD's though since it doesn't always store data from the same physical address especially if you are using TRIM so even if you do wipe the entire disk the info can still be there and can be reassembled sort of like a rubik cube.
