    Quick laptop repair question

My kid knocked my HP laptop off the couch, now the screen looks like a spider web. But no visible cracks. Are they able to fix that?

I'll take a look tomorrow at work. If someone asks me what I'm doing. I'll tell them "Balloon Knot told me to do it"

He's right. There's step by step instructions all over the place. I watched my son replace the screen in his. It's really pretty easy.

See? Even kids can do it. Many Chinese boys do it all day.

And fccstandards, thank us by telling us who's the chick is in your avatar.

It's very simple to replace a laptop screen...a few screws. a couple of cables and you're done. A couple of walk-throughs on the web, a half hour of your time, and a hundred bucks or so saved.

As someone who uses computers in an industrial setting, HP's are the worst for durability and warranty issues. I work in construction, and my company got so fed up with them that they switched completely to Panasonic ToughBooks. HP used to be a good brand, they went downhill about 5 years ago, after their CEO left (she is back now, but the company is in shambles). Even their all in ones are bad, our office abandoned theirs which kept breaking and switched to Canon, and to the best of my knowledge not one has broken in 3 years.

Just to give a quick and dirty, I had the screen on a Sony Vaio crack and had it done at a local place (i.e. - not a best buy). I looked online and the part is really easy to come by and seem to cost somewhere between roughly 50-75, and the labor...meh maybe 2 hours at 30 bucks per?

I've built a bunch of pc's so was fairly comfortable with doing things myself but at least for my model it looked a bit tricky so just wasn't worth the trouble relative to the cost.

Find a local repair shop, not like a Best Buy, but a local business that does computer repair. Have them fix it up. Don't try to fix it on your own unless you're tech savvy.

a suggestion: check out squaretrade warrantees. they tend to cover more than the manufacturer.

do a youtube search of the model w/"screen replacement" someone should have posted one. it's a matter of a few screws then seperating the screens plastic frame. and unplugging a ribbon cable.

check the video out and see if you would be comfortable doing it. if you are, ebay will have a bunch of them, even if they are coming from china, the seller has free shipping and you'll get it in ~2 weeks. at least that's been my experience

LCD screen needs to be replaced. That'll cost you around 150-200 bucks. You could find a replacement on eBay for around 50-120 bucks and do it yourself, but you gotta be handy.

If you got kids in your house you should buy an HP Elitebook, they're indestructible.

Just take the HDD out, that shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

It's an HP pavillion. The screen itself has no screws in it.

the screws hold the plastic frame together. they are usually hidden by a small plug. what model pavillion?
