I've raised 2 and 3/4's of 3 kids and I can't recall one death threat. Plenty of I hate yooooooooous but not one I wish you'd die or I'll kill you. I don't think any of our friends kids have ever said those words to them either. I wonder what in hell it is that has caused this rise in shootings of this magnitude. Back in the 60's-70's when I was growing up we didn't have these events in public schools. The Tower shooter at TX tech had happened but that was blown off as a crazy gun tot'n Texan that freaked out. Thinking about it, to my generation the biggest school shooting was done by the national guard at Kent state.

Yes - you hit the nail on the head. And the problem with that is that there is no simple solution to prevent this from happening again, and it's so frustrating. I told a relative that it was a shame that they didn't get him alive, and they were so shocked that I said it. Why would you want that asshole to be alive? So that we could pay for his incarceration for 60 years? No, to study him.

do you know what's crazy? I read an article recently (an AP article) that said that mass shootings are actually on the decline, and they peaked in 1930 (prohibition/Mafia killings?).

Vashier- this is a common thing- even the killing of children. Many dont even register because back 100 years ago- newspapers didnt exist in every corner of the country and mass killings by crazy people werent publicized. I learned that there was a guy who killed 12 with a shotgun and butcher knife back in the 20's not too far from me in northern cali.

The bathe massacre happened to kids. Brenda Ann Spencer killed kids at an elementry school in san diego during the 70s- which was major for SD but it is telling that you, vashier, didnt know it, or remember it.

Why? Because news stations didnt report the tragedy OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER FOR 7 STRAIGHT DAYS. They didnt have Jimmy Carter come out and give a speech. No one from the chargers dedicated their game to the victims.

the voice of reason shall now opine: the sandy hook shooter was a raving lunatic, the mother is at fault for not having the weapons in a gunsafe. Look at the aurara theater shooter-insane..gabby giffords shooter-insane. How do you regulate insanity?

Easy. Take away their mass murder weapons so when they lose it, as few die as possible.

Personal story here, my wife's mother just got away from her husband. It's her second husband. The guy is fucked up, has PTSD, severe injuries from combat-service, pills to treat the physical and mental traumas, and is, at times, crazy. He'll wake up from a nightmare and tear the bedroom up. He's attacked his wife, not badly enough to leave injuries, but bad enough to terrify her.

Anyways, she finally got out. She called the cops to be present as she got out of the house. This is after they've been called out to the house a few times. They refused to come out to oversee her getting out.

There is a problem with the system, for sure. There is another side to the coin, too. What if someone wants to discredit someone else? What if someone wants to make shit up? My ex-wife threatened to allege that I hit her when I sought a divorce. "I'll make it look good", she said. And she is by all accounts otherwise sane but found herself in a situation she could not handle rationally.

So, had she made good on her threat, maybe reddened a cheek and alleged I slapped her, would it have been "justice" to be an accused wife-beater?

    It's a real catch-22.

Bring back institutions with our new knowledge of psychiatry. Not that "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" stuff, but something to encapsulate evil so it doesn't perpetuate its murderous plots on civilized society.
YES ... this "outpatient" shit isn't working, at all.

It's hard, though. By all accounts Adam Lanza was not the least bit violent. He was sullen and withdrawn and played a shitload of video games, but had a spotless record otherwise. Knowing that, do we lock him away? I don't have the answer.
