targeting so called "assault weapons" is naive: apparently the deciding factor in what makes a weapon an assault weapon is the speed at which it can fire rounds. back in the 1800's such assault weapons did not exist; guns were single action (the hammer had to be manually cocked for every shot) but people decided they needed what we would classify today as an assault pistol so they developed a high tech solution to turn a single action pistol into a fast repeating "automatic" pistol: they lashed the trigger to the handle with a strip of leather so that the gun could be fired quickly by hitting the hammer.

if you eliminate "assault weapons" today, someone will figure out a hack of the remaining weapons to restore to them the "assault" characteristics. people are not stupid in everything they do; for specific goals people can be exceptionally smart and innovative. calls to outlaw "assault weapons" are naive, ignorant and insulting of people's intelligence and will not achieve the desired effect.
