I think I was asked to participate too, not sure though.
He knows for sure whether he was asked or not. So either...
a) he wasn't asked, and doesn't want that to be apparent to his audience, as it is evidence of how much juice he's lost since 2001
b) he was asked and turned it down because he doesn't want to delay the start of his vacation. Stern doesn't want to appear selfish and come on, it isn't like this is the dog-cademy awards or anything
or maybe even

He won't do it because it is for charity. Greedy Howie only does NSAL charity work because that puts Equestrian Girl in the spotlight. Not really charity work if there's a selfish motive behind it.

That's Howard's new standard response when he DOESN'T get invited to something. He said the same thing about the other charity event immediately after the hurricane. He's being more careful about what he says now that we know he was never actually invited to appear on Conan's last Tonight Show, even though he claimed he was.

If you beg him enough, Howard will begrudgingly appear on your show as a personal favor. The appearance, of course, will do nothing to improve the show's ratings or publicity

More than likely someone asked him to donate to the charity for Sandy relief...and in Howies mind that equals being asked to be part of the concert.
