At the risk of defending Howard, I'd say that a testament to his legacy is that many of us, myself especially, are still arguing the merits of someone we haven't listened to in years. That has to count for something.
The points about his transparency, his character, rose-colored glasses and future insight are good and well-taken. But, as the old people say, you wake up with who you went to bed with, and as someone who freely admits to having a lot invested into the show emotionally speaking I will be happily watching him complete his transformation into a fey Howard Hughes.
Howard sleeps tonight alone in an empty mansion wishing he could lose those last Freshman 15. I had to work a half day (on a fucking SATURDAY no less) then took apart a Mustang carb (it was a leaky accelerator pump diaphragm), cooked up some Onion Lo Mein and watched Netflix with a cat on my lap and a beer in my hand. I think I won going away.
