I was helping my brother drive back from Orlando to Wisconsin in 1995. He was interviewing some stripper and asked her if she was "blonde in the lap too". My brother and I laughed about that for about 500 miles.
On my way to school, listening to WYSP in Philly and hearing the Miss amputee contest (i'm younger) I was trying to figure out what the fuck was going on and was hooked. Coincidentally, i ended up hanging out with the chick who won after a Bob Levy comedy show years later.
And I love the Ocean~ have family down in Florida so I visit as much as humanly possible.![]()
In public school I had a friend who had tapes of the show from cousin. It was all Dice stuff. He had the Dice Rules album and a couple of appearances.
Driving to Baja to go surf, turned on 91X and heard some stuttering buffoon ask Liberace's boyfriend..."...who t,t,t,took more b,b,b,b,balls of his chin, Yogi Berra or Lliberace?'
I always though Howard was a douche from seeing his appearances on talk shows, but I was hooked after hearing Stuttering John.
Letterman fan since the early 80s (used to videotape it even though I was in elementary school).
Despite seeing him on 'Late Night', I didn't really know who Howard was till I moved to L.A.
I seem to remember seeing the Saturday night show on Channel 13 (KCOP) before I remember hearing the radio show on 97.1 KLSX.
I also remember, though, being surprised to learn that Robin was black (I thought she was blonde), so I must've heard the radio show before seeing the Channel 9 Show.
Anyone else from Los Angeles remember the timeline better than I do?
Pity you older listeners didn't tape the pre-WXRK shows, though I'm still wondering why I didn't take my easily-accesible camcorder to the L.A. funeral.
Howard first was on 91X in San Diego, then the Channel 9 show came on, and then he was on 97.1 KLSX...if I remember correctly. I do remember that Kato Kaelin and Susan Olson (Cindy Brady) had a show that followed Howard's on KLSX. Hard to believe that station couldn't make it.
Wow, I envy you guys. You guys go WAY back to the NBC days. I wish I could have listened back then but then again I hated all of that clapping. The show got better in the late 80s with Stuttering John and Billy West and I loved all of Richard Simmons' appearances in the late 80/early 90s and Howard, Jackie and Fred would relentlessly goof on him LOL.
Good to know someone's memory is loopier than mine.
Channel 9 Show simulcast may have preceded 97.1 KLSX L.A., but the dopey talk-radio format that included Kato Kaelin and Susan Olson wouldn't happen until several years later.
Who'd hire Kato for a radio gig prior to the OJ trial? KLSX's transition from classic rock to talk radio happened after the O.J. fiasco.
Howard was most definitely on radio/TV in L.A. before San Diego.
All apologies, Atomic Wedgie -- I didn't mean to sound like a dick, but San Diego was indeed a later Stern Show market than Los Angeles, and KLSX didn't switch to a talk radio format until the OJ trial.
No Ha-Ha's work in either of our favor; in the end, Cindy Brady and Kato Kaelin both landed radio shows.
