I suspect that if it was a peregrine you probably wouldn't be able to grab it: adults have been clocked at > 100 mph bursts. their prey is other birds of their size. red tail is more common. i only see the peregrines around my home at sunrise as they're hunting pigeons in flight over Riverside Park.

Well I didn't snatch him outta the air! I turned 44 today, my cat-like reflexes are long gone! The cat (Bart, the black one) had the bird pinned on the ground when I got him (both times, got away from me once).

if i didn't anticipate PETA knocking at my door, i would try to get one in doors ("pet" just doesn't seem like the right way to refer to them). i know some people who have semi-domesticated native birds and an apt-sized falcon would be fun.

whats the story on the neighbors aplacas? how many, whats he use them for, does it actually make money, whats the downside?

They have 30-35 and one llama. They use them for their fur (fiber) and make money from sales and breeding as well. Not sure how profitable it is....seems like lots of tax breaks. Maybe a pyramid scheme......hell if I know. From what I can tell with the tax breaks and boarding fees they charge that they get a "free" hobby. I haven't inquired much about it so I'm not sure if any downsides. I know I can take care of their animals in less time than it takes me to take care of two horses. Ponderous.

jersey city has kingfishers here in late summer. while waiting for the ferry i watch them dive into the hudson river and pop out a few seconds later. I didn't know anything like that lived that close to NYC (and who knew anything could dive into the hudson and live afterwards?).

doubt a cat would take on a peregrine

kestrels are pretty small not much bigger than a robin, mostly eat insects and the occasional mousey
