Senate Republicans saw it as a threat to American "sovereignty," even though the treaty wouldn't have required the United States to change its laws.

the proposal simply "raises the [international] standard to our level without requiring us to go further."

In other words, we wouldn't actually have to do anything except say we like the treaty -- and then wait for other signatories around the world to catch up to the United States' Americans with Disabilities Act.

Thank Gawd for the GOP protecting us when our Freedoms are under attack!

In an address at the National Press Club today, Sen. Bernie Sanders tore into John Boehner and his fellow House Republicans for suggested cutting disabled veterans’ benefits in order to reduce the deficit.

John Boehner’s deficit reduction proposal includes cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid with new tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. Boehner also called for a switch to the chained CPI, which would reduce annual cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security recipients, and for disabled veterans.


Sanders called Boehner’s proposal morally and economically unacceptable, “It is morally and economically unacceptable that anyone in Congress would propose more tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and large corporations while at the same time proposing significant cuts for disabled veterans,. This is not what the American people want and it is not what must happen.”

I think that since it's not actually legislation that would change anything of cost anything, it had a dual purpose:

1-Send a message to the Entitlement Generation that we're not happy about them leeching off Our country, and given the chance, we're gonna change that...

2-Remind the rest of the world that We are special, and that We will never, ever, give up our Freedoms by associating ourselves with ANY global movements, because it would be Quasi-Communist, and an affront to God. (Tell 'em 'bout that One World Government thing and the mark of the Beast, Matthew!)
