His first run was a disaster. He knows it, the execs over at NBC know it, and all the fans know it. The main reason Howard is returning, is because otherwise it would look like he had been fired/not asked back.

you might be right. I can't imagine any other reason for them to invite him back.
Listen, Living, Evolved, Work In Progress.....Created by man solved by man

he signed a 2 year deal for 40 million grand
NBC expected someone edgy and someone "mean", someone who would play a heel and be like Simon Cowell. They got an old queen who's dancing in faggy clothes on stage with other men and is trying to resuscitate his image and wants to be loved because his wife is with him only because of his fame and she wants to attend all the celeb parties in Hamptons so Howie's bad image was a no-no. That's why fucking dogs won!
NBC Entertainment are the biggest losers here.. along with their audience who watches this vomit.

Here are the many possible reason's why NBC probably renewed Howard:
- NBC didn't want to admit they were wrong. NBC rarely admits they are wrong and will stick with a disaster long beyond they should. Heck, Leno still may be still on at 10PM every night if the local affiliates didn't band together and tell NBC that they weren't showing Leno at 10PM anymore even if that meant pulling their ability to broadcast NBC programming. NBC put a lot of money and capital promoting Howard on AGT and they don't want to admit they are wrong.
- The V.P. of reality television in charge of AGT is a superfan and even is an occasional guest on the Stern Show. He is probably convinced that Stern brings ratings and Sharon and Howie not being a good fit for Howard along with the Olympics hurt the ratings. Everyone around Howard seems to be starstruck and hoodwinked into his BS about how great he is.
- No one else with a decent name wanted the job. For the female judge that are talking "big time stars" like Lea Remini. They need a big name to pull people in. The genre is dying. Virtually all of these shows are seeing rapid declines in the ratings. On other shows, bigger names have gotten black eyes for not bringing in the ratings like Ellen, Paula Abdul on X Factor, Britney Spears, etc. It will be increasingly harder and more expensive to get big names to host these shows. AGT seems to be one of the shows losing steam faster than the other ones and stars are probably not going to bet it was all Howard, at least not without getting more than Howard got.
- Howard took a huge pay cut. He will never admit it since he never admits his failings, but he might have taken a drastic pay cut just to prove he was a success. I am sure that Buckwald will leak that he got a significant raise, but it will never get out if he took a big pay cut. I also think Howard wants to stick it Sirius by continuing another six month long ordeal of the Stern Show being the AGT Wrap Show.
Good points - I think Howard exercised his option to return for a second year or they brought him back despite last year's failure with a pay reduction (hopefully without any performance bonuses, which could result in litigation).
AGT is horrid - if a dog act wins, and a second rate comic and a dude who gets hit in the nuts are considered "quality" acts, it's a miracle they get any viewers at all. Stern has shown he has no ability to add new fans to the audience, but it's likely that hiring another judge won't improve things either.
this
The new judge is already doomed. He, or more likely she, will have to "cut through", or even worse, play along with Howard's schtick.
He's holding the show homo-hostage.
How in sweet baby Jesus' name did he make that shit-awful show worse?!? That almost is a talent!
Nobody in their right mind, after witnessing even a second of his nonsense on AGT, would willingly bring him back for another season.
Like you said, it was clearly a two-year deal all along, with the option to come back for a second season in Howard's hands.
The only drama/question/"negotiating" going on was him trying to get more money and upping his demands, NBC not budging, Howard threatening to walk, NBC not only not budging but secretly hoping and praying he would, then Howard finally agreeing to come back under the original terms of the contract...................or as little as NBC was legally allowed to pay him.
It's so sad how he just foists himself on things now, sucking the life and money out of them.
"I heard you're.............really....................sick" - devoted wife Beth Ostrosky, to her husband, H. Allen Stern

My theory is the executives at NBC are retarded.
And Howard is greedy.
Ill bet that NBC asked him back for the same reason Sirius asked him back: he lowered his price when he realized that he put his public mouthpiece at risk.
Howard may be greedy as fuck, but he values the ability to spew his thoughts to the masses without confrontation more than cash. Look at the amount of cash he spends just to make sure he can live in a world where "everybody agrees with him, kisses his ass and tells him how much of a success he is" even though he's utterly irrelevant, has lost 10-20 million listeners (depending on who you believe as far as how many he ever had) and hasn't been able to move the needle (any needle) in over four years.
I think that we will find out that Howard caved over due course.
The above is strictly my humble opinion.
I did not watch one minute of America's Got Talent with Howard. Seems a bit gay or for ladies.
I'm just praying that they don't get a new judge that actually DOES bring ratings. imagine the bullshit he'll be able to spout.
Thats what Im thinking. He always had a two-year deal, w/ the option to opt out. after its dismal failure, he feels compelled to try to salvage whats left of his image...

TV (network) execs are some of the dumbest people you will ever encounter on the face of the earth.
