I just wish that sometimes "management" would stand behind (or at least act like they do) their underlings for at least a split second. At the 1st sign of trouble the "save yourself" mentality goes full throttle and everyone underneath gets a swift kick to the junk. I haven't had a supervisor that I've felt is willing to "go to bat" for me in some time. If I do something wrong I expect and accept my punishment but if I've done no wrong I'd like to feel that some effort of protection is forthcoming. Up to Captains are civil service....above is appointed.

To be fair the civil service promotional system is sort of a joke also. People with gravy jobs (obtained due to connections often times) spend their whole work day studying while working stiffs have to spend valuable family time. Like any other job being fair isn't always the rule.

In 17 years I have 1 (yes 1) attaboy in writing (a pretty neat medal actually) because it's too much effort for most bosses to make that acknowledgement. I'm not needy in that I must hear that I've done well. I already know that and take my paychecks as "thanks". I don't need a public lynching urged on by my chain of command when I've done my job correctly and something goes awry. I also don't need them making my job more difficult because of knee jerk reactions when something goes wrong, or appears to, elsewhere in the department. I know that's how things go but it doesn't mean that I have to like it.
