I'm Going To See "A Christmas Carol" This Weekend

There is no doubt that Marley was dead. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate.

Charles Dickens was a brilliant writer. He was particularly great with his opening paragraphs. While his writing is incredibly sympathetic to the human condition he was a miserable sob who didn't particularly like people

It does throw me a little to see the diversity in the play when the characters are supposed to be from London during the Industrial Revolution. I know Cratchit is from the slums but his christmas dinner table is a veritable festival of nations in modern productions

Say boy, what day is it?

    Why it's Christmas Day.

    Hooray!

I prefer Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.... With razzleberry dressing.
    This is better than rejuvenation.

I have never understood why Ebeneezer has resentment for Fred just because his beloved sister died in childbirth with him. I woud think that would have made him embrace the boy all the more.

ebeneezer didn't like anyone because of the way his father neglected him and treated him harshly. blaming is nephew for his sister's death was just an excuse to disconnect from Fred.

The nephew is a family member. He is Scrooge's nephew, the only daughter of his beloved sister.

My favorite scene is when the tow cart salesmen run into each other on the street, spilling their product. They curse at each other and are about to throw down Allstarhiphop style until the ghost of christmas present sprinkles some dust on them and the apologize and embrace like drunks on a bender.

While that is true early in his life, the father suddenly changed his ways, as Fran details when she goes to pick him up from boarding school. I wonder if visits from ghosts ran in the family or it was some kind of schizophrenia which caused the rapid mood swings of two generations of Scrooges

BTW I recently read Bleak House and it's a LONG read. So I'm plodding along, wondering why nothing's really happening, and something so wonderful happens that brings all this stuff together, it just makes your heart sing. Then the ending is so beautiful it just makes you love humankind. Same thing with Great Expectations

That Dickens guy he was pretty good
