The United States places 17th in the developed world for education, according to a global report by education firm Pearson.

Finland and South Korea, not surprisingly, top the list of 40 developed countries with the best education systems. Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore follow. The rankings are calculated based on various measures, including international test scores, graduation rates between 2006 and 2010, and the prevalence of higher education seekers.

Pearson's chief education adviser Sir Michael Barber tells BBC that the high ranking countries tend to offer teachers higher status in society and have a "culture" of education.

I think what he means is that poor people tend to stay poor, and if the parents are lazy welfare moochers, 99% likely their kids will be too, and even if they're not, they are destined for very low-level jobs. It's ridiculous to waste taxpayer money trying to impart useless knowledge on such people. And speaking of wasting money, I'm tired of seeing teachers, most of whom are libby libtards, BTW, and communist/unionist, sucking up tens of thousands of dollars for really doing nothing, a few hours a day, a few days of the year.

We do need to make changes in education. Consider a much larger emphasis on Pre-K programs. Don't bust the teacher's union, but incentivize good outcomes and deincentivize failure--one simple way is to tie performance to obtaining tenure at a school don't just give tenure to a teacher who spent x years showing up for work but consistently performing lower than their peers in a given district--make them earn it. Most good teachers would be fine with this.

the current system sucks, teachers that cant be fired is a problem in some locales. the real problem is that with all the money we spend, still not reaching the blacks. its not important to their culture/families & it shows on their test scores. major changes are needed
