Yes you can use Mysql on a cloud. The cost of cloud doesn't warrant the use just yet. I hate the pay for what you use option and places like Rackspace are way out of my price range.

You might be right bout the mysql. Running vbulletin on several servers is still the best and cheapest option i think. The next step would be to add a database server. Very simple and efficient.

a separate db server would help just by getting the db io on its own spindles. even if the db server is virtual it helps for mysql. i inherited a system at work written in php and a mysql db (with 16gb of data). its running on a vmware server image on an ESX frame. its the only db we can run on a virtual image without sucking all the resources to the db. we tried sql server 2008 & oracle 11G but they want too much from the VM and have lots of time out issues. mysql is happy living on a VM.

cdn is a third party content delivery network. it uses a farm of servers to send the site's static content to users rather than requiring Dawg's server to handle all of it. on sites with loads of content that doesn't change it makes the sites appear very fast to users while removing the load from the main servers.

i'm just curious because generally php BB sites are not static content. the content is generated on each page refresh from small graphic primitive files, plus VB is ajax heavy which means the content is constantly being refreshed atomically between page refreshes.

plus i don't see any page load delays. when i load my debugger i see page loads of under 2/3 second.

I have already optimized vBulletin about as much as i can. vBulletin is a huge package that uses a lot of resources. Are most American forums slow for you?
