It's only better after you've been there a few weeks and you stop counting the number of days since school started.

If you really hate it, you need to make a change, but don't make it right now. It's never a good idea to make a major life decision in the middle of a crisis. Your decision will be based on escaping the immediate discomfort you're in rather than on what's best for you. Wait for the crisis to die down a bit and then make your decision.

It sounds like you should start making your life what you actually want it to be, though. Why are you living a life you hate?

Ugh, hell no, I will not be on my death bed while still living here! I see elderly people struggling while crossing the street, etc. and I feel so bad for them. Sure, maybe they are here by choice at such an advanced age but I can't imagine it's easy for them. Lately I've been noticing people even in their sixties (not that old) here and thinking to myself, 'I'll be out of here well before I reach that age! I will not be one of them!'

Yep, it was me. They'd be the only things I'd miss about this town. I love those hawks. I go to visit them almost every day!

There would probably be more cool animals in the country. You could have allot of fun with your camera.

I turned 40 in August. I work in a field (finance) totally unrelated to my talents and higher education (artistic talent, BA and MA in forensic psychology).

I just got back from a glorious vacation in Australia (my fourth visit to that beautiful country) and do NOT want to return to work on Wednesday. I've lived in NYC for 22 years and can't stand it anymore. Hate the assholes, hate the noise, hate the grit.

I feel the need to make serious changes in my life. I want to quit my job, sublet my apartment, move to the country, live off my savings and sublet fees, and start fresh with a quiet part-time job somewhere in my new environs and use my free time to explore nature and work on my art work.

My boyfriend says I can definitely do all that! I have the savings to get me by for a few years if I get no work (coupled with the sublet fees, I'd be pretty nicely set). But I'm too chicken shit to make such a big change. I make decent money and am too scared to leave it behind (I grew up poor so the idea of going back to living on meager wages scares me).

I feel so stressed and confused and tired of this all, I want to cry.
Looks like you wrote a country song there, missy.

That's no mid-life crisis... that's making sense with no balls to get it done. Give your two weeks notice on Monday and get your dream started. Your boyfriend is right.

You seem to have all your ducks in a row. If he supports you enough to change careers, you should totally go for it.

You think this is bad? Wait til you turn 50. Do what you want to do now because if 50 comes around and you're still in the same boat, it won't be easy on ya.
    Ask me anything.

If you were a guy, I'd say do what I did: Buy a Corvette and get a young girlfriend.

I told my wife that I wanted to buy a Corvette and she asked if I was having a mid life crises. I said "no, I'm just in a position in life where I have everything else I need and can finally justify spending the money on something like that"

I think this is the case for a lot of older guys that buy Vets. People always mistake it for them having a mid life crisis.
    Ask me anything.

Yeah, but these days, it has to be some sort of mental defect to want a Vette for any reason.
