Judging from the tight formation, that looks like a fucked up thing to be doing with full clips. I assume they're supposed to be empty and one guy had a round in the chamber from before. His career may be fucked because of his negligence, and he knows he deserves what's coming to him.

Yeah for a moment I thought that could be a weird ceremonial thing they do before moving into action or target practice (i.e. they were in fact loading their guns), but this is not plausible considering how close they are to each other. Even if the guy's gun cleared, the sight of a round popping out would have merited him all the shit military service has to offer.

Re: $800 vs. $35k missiles, the number of Iron Dome missiles fired is at best in the low thousands. That's chump change in military terms.

Here is some of the full video...with some add on edits at the end for dramatic/amusing effect.

Aspects such as development costs and operating expenses need to be factored in.

It's also an ongoing project so even though it's (somewhat) operational..it is still dealing with constant testing, upgrades
and various levels of "prototyping" etc.
It's the type of weapons system that will never be fully "finished/developed".

The IDF has a nifty little something in store during one of the next development phases that should be coming online
within the next year or so...or as needed/required etc.

Ah, now it all makes sense. What an insane way to load a rifle!!!!

With people standing in front, that shit was just bound to happen.

Yeah I certainly didn't mean to dispute that. My point was that I don't think Hamas has much chance of bankrupting Israel through their shenanigans. They are better off going for the "winning the hearts and minds of the international community" approach -- or, for that matter, the "let us all unite in killing the Jews" radical Islamist approach.

I agree...Also thanks for the full vid Winst....a stupid place to be with a loaded assault rifle of any kind. All automatic weapons have the potential to pop off if there's a round in the chamber and the bolt slams home.

The closest thing I've seen to that was at a firing range in basic. When you're finished at a firing range, the people in charge will typically run a brass rod down your barrel to be sure that your chamber is clear. You typically move down to your knees after your bolt is locked open (at least back in my day...may be different now), and put the butt of the weapon on the ground, so that it can be rodded. Once, I saw a guy get on his knees, put his rifle butt on the ground; just as the NCO was a couple of inches away from getting the rod down the barrel, his rifle's bolt slammed forward and he had a round in the chamber...which shot off.

It could have been a bit more dramatic if that brass rod was down the barrel.

I say, did anyone listen to Howard Stern this morning? He had some strippers in the studio, they sounded hot, then he made a joke about a negro, but Robin laughed so it was ok. - Stewie Griffin

^ My experience is that after finishing at the range, everyone removes the clip, pulls the thing all the way back, and holds it there while an officer walks around checking everyone's chamber out at close range. Same effect as with the rod.

Thinking about this stuff on an organizational level, having soldiers fire those types of dangerous salutes seems just insane. Statistically speaking, there has to be at least a handful of meaningless injuries/deaths per year because of that.

Yeah, that is an insane exercise. There's no reason for that kind of showmanship. There's comments on the YouTube video about the shot being a blank, but I doubt it, unless there's some kind of invisible blank adapter on those rifles. The whole point of a blank adapter (other than putting a big red thing on the end of your rifle that says, "hey, I'm not shooting bullets"), is that it forces the explosive gas back down the barrel so that the gas feed still works as intended. There's no blank adapters on those rifles.

That guy who had his beret shot off deserves a friggin' medal.

I'd hazard a guess that it wasn't the guy who popped the round off who got in trouble for that, but the NCO/Officer who came up with that exercise who did.

Ha! Now that you mentioned it -- considering how crazy the whole exercise is -- shooting blanks without an adapter -- as weird as that sounds -- kind of makes sense too. If I remember correctly, blanks contain a piece of wood that disperses when it hits the adapter. If there's no adapter, it flies forward at 800m/s or something. My best guess is that it's lethal from neck up, but perhaps not that bad if taken in the back?
