    Well, if you're properly evaluated/diagnosed by a psychiatrist (not a therapist/psychologist), your medical needs can be addressed with some type of anti-depressant combination in addition to behavioral therapy; two things Artie didn't/wasn't able to comply with.

He knew all to well about the tragic deaths and horror stories, listened to all of the songs talking about how heroin fucks your life up, and he still decided to do it. It'd be one thing if he was in an accident, and had to take pills for the pain, and then things just escalated, but he didn't. He got hooked on heroin because he didn't like doing stand up gigs and couldn't sleep in hotel rooms. Waaaaaaah!
    It's called "self-medicating." Look it up.
