No I think he changed to that like on October 20, 2012. He supported a federal ammendment to define marriage as a union of one man and one woman throughout his campaign and in the republican debates. It is wrong to say he had the exact same postion as Obama on Gay marriage.

He doesn't need republicans for tax increases, current tax rates expire. Obama and Republicans can either allow them to expire on everyone, expire on the wealthy, or potentially change the tax code (like Obama was willing to do until Boehner backed out of the deal in 2011.) I'll let you look up why the current tax rates could never be made permanent even with a republican house and senate.
