I worked with many skilled union guys on the docks & ships but these boxpullers just pulled boxes off a pallet so not too much skill there. I was just surprised that the union charged the companies $45/hr and these guys couldn't even drive a forklift.

I see both sides on that debate but in the end the union lost those jobs to some illegals off dock.

All work on the docks are done by the Longshore and Warehouse union who are supervised by the Stevedores which is a separate company. The Food company says we need so many guys for this ship and the Stevedores are the middle man to coordinate. The companies have to budget for every ship so they know what each union guy costs.

The only employees that the food companies have on the docks were management, uniquely skilled, or secretaries. Anything hands on was union work. What was crazy is the Longshore guys would try to steal hours from the warehouse guys and vice versa. They cannabalized each other.

I'm sure every union is different but the docks can get fucked up because there is so much money there and the work can be part time. Crane operators easily made 6 figures working 20 hours a week.
