The kid's both. He will first do a climbing route a few times with ropes to really study it, then he will free solo without ropes. Yesterday Alex Honnold and his partner set a new speed climbing record (with ropes as most climbers use):

I remember a story about another climber ( I think it was on 60 minutes, not really sure) . It was a woman climber and her parents were aid workers in Africa and she had apet monkey as a child that she chased through the trees. They said that because she did this when she was still growing it stretched her limbs out. I thought it was a cool story.
I missed that one. I try to watch every episode too since the stories range from politics to science to pop culture. The science of sleep was a real eye opener
