If the ratings for AGT don't improve, Howard's negotiating position for any future contracts has been severely damaged. His biggest bargaining chip has always been his supposed millions of intensely loyal fans who will follow him anywhere and make any project an instant success. Most of us have known for years that it wasn't true any more, now the myth has been exposed. If his fanbase still cared about him they would have produced record high ratings for AGT, no matter what was on the other channels or whether they were regular TV viewers.

This. Howard may not be killing where comedy is concerned, but he's killing where it counts. Hard to laugh at a guy who hardly does a damn thing and is the highest paid entertainer. A half dozen days a month shooting the shit on his show and judging a silly talent contest gets him about $100M this year.
