Well I pulled the trigger. I've been looking at these very expensive ice ball makers for a few weeks. The good ones go for over 1500 bucks and are made of solid copper. This week I talked to a guy on my route that has a CNC machine shop. Showed him the videos and he laughed. He told me if I bring him the metal parts he would machine me one like I had in mind for 100 bucks. Just ordered the parts needed for only 60 bucks. So for 160 I'll have an aluminum version of one like in this video but mine will be double sided and make two different sizes of ice balls. 1" on on side and invert the blocks to make 2" balls on the other side. With the double sided model I've designed it has the added benefit of holding hot water to keep it warm and speed the process. If it works like I hope I might start selling these things as they are in high demand.
I've seen those as well as the Hans solo, R2D2, and Millennium Falcon ice cube makers. Those have too many edges for a purist and melt enough to ruin the scotch. The perfect seamless ice balls melt less and keep the scotch cold without diluting it. That being said, the geek in me finds those cool as hell.
Howard has ice molds modeled after Ralph's testicles. It's a whole thing
Morning everybody
I got a late start today; had to make a weird repair to my stove.
