I don't think he was ever against gay marriage. He says whatever to help get elected. He was riding the fence on it this year and it became politically impossible to maintain. He was bashing North Carolina for banning gay marriage while supposedly being against gay marriage himself. It was just too obviously a giant fraud.

I guess the official story is that Biden coming out for gay marriage pressured him.
