View Full Version : Confessions of a Chevy Volt Owner

“Confessions of a Chevy Volt Owner.” A surprising, frank interview with an owner of a Volt after one year of driving.
203 miles per gallon in the first year at 16,000 miles. Not a typo. His previous car, a Volvo, got 18 miles per gallon.
“I wish I bought the car. I absolutely love it.” He leased it because he was skeptical of owning it. But, wishes he bought it.
“I didn’t buy it to save money.” The biggest surprise here. He bought it to help eliminate the need for oil.
“My home electricity bill is about the same as when my daughter lived here in high school.” After a year of plugging it in to his home, his electricity bill remains the same and didn’t go up as expected.
He responds to the common criticism, “The Chevy Cruze is cheaper.”“Well, a bicycle is even cheaper and saves more gas than the Cruze. So is a used car. So is walking. Look, this isn’t about money, it’s about oil.”

Actually, all the reports I've seen, say the high performance electric engines are faster on acceleration than combustion. It's instant and doesn't need to build up. I've never driven one, just what I've read and seen. :dontknow:

Approx. 2.5 cents per mile on electricity (7 cents per KwH to charge with non-tiered pricing) vs. 20 cents per mile on gas (at 20 MPG and $4 per gallon).

...my math says youre saving $3.50 every 20 miles. now figure in the cost of a 60 to 90k tesla to save gas? nah. the chevy is probably at least 40k. i wanted to buy the 1st year leaf really bad but i thought maybe better wait. i drive a dino loving '85 300 turbo diesel and dont care about 4.30 a gallon diesel cause i dont have a car payment. last tank i got 28 mpg and its a fucking tiger on the open road. slow off the line tho.

Well, no one's buying a Tesla to save gas, Tesla buyers are like DeLorean buyers, they want to be the cool kids with the latest gizmo. I was very impressed with the look of the roadster, looks better than in the photos I've seen. Tiny two-seater about the size of the old Mazda Miata.

I thought about getting a Leaf but changed my mind. I'm a Bimmer enthusiast, I'll wait for the Ultimate Driving Machine. Love my 335i, and it gets really good freeway mileage, like 34 - 36 mpg, but stop and go driving and accelerating with the twin turbo you can almost hear the gas going gluk, gluk, gluk.

What's probably going to happen is a "buy car/lease battery" marketing strategy for EV vehicles. Battery technology is rapidly advancing, won't be an issue a decade from now, at which point even a dolt like you will be driving an electric vehicle.

Bob Lutz, the former vice chairman at General Motors who helped develop the Volt, said he’s angered that the car has become politicized.
“I don’t mind criticizing Obama, I don’t mind criticizing the Democrats and, you know me, I think global warming is a huge hoax perpetrated by the global political left,” Lutz said. “But when it comes to starting to tell outright lies to advance your political purposes and damage an American company that is greatly on its way back, hurt American employment in Hamtramck, Michigan, I just think it’s totally outrageous.”
Lutz, a Republican, said he voted for former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum in the Michigan Republican primary in part because former Massachusetts Governor Romney wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times in 2008 headlined “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” about his opposition to a GM bailout.

What scares you about BMWs? I've found them no more or less reliable than other cars I've owned, but it's true that the usual R&M will cost you a bundle. I'm really partial to the 3 series... it's funny, the specs on the 335i are every bit as good as the M3 (6 cylinder with fuel injection vs. V8 without)

Not true. Lutz was never at the helm at GM. He's a car guy and a damn good one at that. Back in the early 90's when Chrysler was faltering as they held onto their k-car design for too long, it was Lutz who was put in charge of the product line and came through with the cab-forward cars that were the best looking American cars on the road. Chryslers were selling so well, the company was awash in cash. So much so that Daimler acquired the company. Lee Iacocca made a big mistake in not picking Lutz to succeed him and has publicly stated that. Say what you want about his politics but you can't say shit about him as a car guy.

The legendary test drivers at Consumer Reports this week got their hands on a $107,000 dream machine — the Fisker Karma, an electric sports car that goes zero-to-60 in the blink of an eye.
Sort of.
Trouble is, the car conked out faster than you can say “lemon.”
“We buy about 80 cars a year and this is the first time in memory that we have had a car that is undriveable before it has finished our check-in process,” noted CR, which had to call a flatbed truck to tow the brickmobile away.
It wouldn’t be much of a tale, except for one thing: The clunker was created by a company that’s been feasting on your tax dollars — specifically, a $529 million green-energy loan guarantee from Team Obama.
