The White House intends to boost government subsidies for wealthy buyers of the Chevy Volt and other new-technology vehicles — to $10,000 per buyer.

That mammoth subsidy would cost taxpayers $100 million each year if it is approved by Congress, presuming only 10,000 new-technology autos are sold each year.

But the administration wants to get 1 million new-tech autos on the road by 2015. The subsidy cost of that goal could reach $10 billion.

Wonder where that is in his new (so called) budget.

Harry Reid won't even bring it up for a vote in the Senate.

Investing in technology that will produce cleaner, more efficient vehicles, reduce dependence on foreign oil, support the domestic auto industry and expand the tax base by creating well-paying American jobs is a terrible idea and ought to be stopped!!!

I wonder if that also includes fire insurance.

That's also money that could be used for tax breaks and subsidies for Exxon and the other struggling oil companies!

Probably not. After all just one Volt caught fire after a month after a pole crash and rollover test. Fire insurance should perhaps be extended to conventional vehicles, 250,000 of which catch fire each year.

What a fucking asshole. It's bills and a belief of "I know what's best for you" like this that made me leave the Democratic Party years ago. I didn't think anyone could be more of an idiot than Bush II, but Obama is clearly the biggest moron.

Let me see if I understand this correctly: Obama wants to devise a subsidy for a "private" company to sell its product, giving them an unfair advantage in the marketplace; a product that will not make any impact on the planet (seriously, by eating less dairy, which will cause me to pass less gas, will help the environment more than this idiotic concept); costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars will no real benefits (other than to GM's bottom line); and create a tax break for the rich, who are the only ones who can afford a $45,000 automobile in the first place. No wonder the economy is in the shitter.

All this while Obama is still shelling out billions of tax dollars in subsidies and tax breaks to the oil companies. The same industry that's "supposedly" hurting our environment and ecosystem by drilling for oil in our oceans and on our lands.

Even though I hate government's involvement in the private sector, wouldn't it make more sense to cut those subsidies and tax breaks for the oil companies and donate it for research in developing a more cost-efficient battery powered automobile?

Nah, it makes too much sense. Plus, it doesn't bring in donations toward his re-election campaign.
